Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Construction of Elegu Climate Resilient & Gender Responsive Cross-border Market that took place on Wednesday, 13th August 2025 at Elegu Town Council, Amuru District.
The First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga was the chief guest for the groundbreaking ceremony. She tasked the Ministry of Works and Transport to resolve the issue around flooding in Elegu once and for all.
She said there is a need to find a lasting solution to the problem, even if the market is climate resilient. “This has gone on for far too long” she stressed.
The Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Ms. Signe Winding, said floods not only affect business but are also responsible for ill-health. She stressed that the facility have the capacity to accommodate 1500 vendors and that it will be equipped with modern facilities like restaurant, banking hall, child care center, waste handling points and secure gate house.
Allen Asiimwe, the Deputy Country Director, Trade Mark Africa Uganda, in charge of Programs, said the climate resilient market in Elegu will not be flooded since it is designed to be climate resilient.
The Government of Uganda, with support from the European Union and the Embassy of Denmark under the Global Gateway Team Europe Initiative, is investing €9.8M (UGX 41B) to building a modern market in Elegu that is climate-resilient, accessible, and inclusive.
This project will:
Stop flood-related closures,
Give women and persons with disabilities dignified trading spaces
Introduce affordable banking services
Boost regional trade year-round
