Residents of Lakang Sub-county in Amuru District finally have reason to look forward to a brighter future as construction of the much-anticipated Lakang Epicentre steadily progresses. Currently at 20 percent completion, the project is expected to be finalized by January 2027. However, contractors on site are optimistic that key sections of the facility will be ready for use by the end of 2026.

For a community that has long operated without a government health facility, the epicentre represents more than just infrastructure. it is a promise of improved access to essential services and a significant step toward better living conditions.

Once complete, the facility will include an Outpatient Department (OPD) block, two units of staff housing, and a main hall that will accommodate sub-county administrative offices. This integrated approach is expected to bring critical health and government services closer to the people, reducing the burden of long-distance travel and improving service delivery.

These developments were highlighted during a site meeting held in Lakang on Friday, where district leaders and stakeholders gathered to assess progress and reaffirm their commitment to the project. Speaking at the meeting, Amuru District Chief Administrative Officer, John Bosco Opiyo, commended the contractors for maintaining a positive working relationship with the community. He encouraged them to sustain this collaboration and urged residents to continue offering the support needed to ensure smooth progress of the works.

LCV representative Agrey Kieth Akera also addressed the gathering, warning the community against any acts of sabotage that could derail the project. He emphasized that the epicentre belongs to the people of Lakang and will ultimately serve their interests, urging residents to take ownership and protect the initiative.

The ongoing construction has already begun to positively impact the community. Beyond the visible progress on site, the project is creating employment opportunities for local residents. According to the contractors, Alison Consult, at least 51 percent of the workforce has been drawn from within the community, an effort that is boosting household incomes while strengthening local ownership of the project.

Despite the official completion timeline, Alison Consult has expressed commitment to accelerating the works so that residents can start benefiting from the facility by the end of the year, further reinforcing the growing optimism among the people of Lakang.

In a further boost to local coordination and service delivery, the project’s implementing partner, The Hunger Project, handed over two motorcycles during the same meeting. One motorcycle was given to the Sub-county Chief, David Otim, and another to the Chairperson of the Epicentre. The motorcycles are expected to ease mobilization and supervision efforts, ensuring the smooth implementation and eventual operation of the facility.

As construction continues, hope is steadily rising across Lakang Sub-county. What was once a long-standing challenge, the absence of a government health facility is now on the verge of becoming a story of transformation. With collective effort and sustained commitment, the Lakang Epicentre stands as a symbol of progress, resilience, and a better tomorrow for its people.
